Procedure and reasons for auctions
Pawnshops offer pawn loans, whereby customers deposit valuable items (collateral) and receive short-term financial support, i.e. a loan, in return. Auctions are held if a customer fails to redeem or extend their collateral within the agreed period.
Pawn loan and term
The customer gives a valuable item to the pawnbroker as security for a loan.
The term of the loan is normally three months with an additional one-month period for extension or redemption.

Unredeemed collateral
If the customer fails to repay the loan or extend the collateral, the item will be sold. The pawnshop may therefore auction off the item to cover the outstanding amount.
Public auctions of collateral
The unclaimed valuables will be sold at a public auction.
The auctions are conducted in accordance with legal requirements and are led by a court-appointed auctioneer.

Proceeds and remaining credit
If the auction proceeds exceed the outstanding loan amount, the original owner is entitled to the additional proceeds.
If the sale price is lower, the pawnshop bears the risk, and the customer remains debt-free.
